Baller on a Budget: Your Guide to Free Summer Concerts in Boston

It’s no secret that Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial beginning of Summer Music Festival season all across the country, with iconic events like Coachella, Lollapalooza, and of course, our very own Boston Calling. I’ve had the privilege of performing on multiple stages at that event over the years, and I can give a firsthand account of just how much fun it is. The music, the comedy, the people, the atmosphere, and the delicious food can’t be beat.
That said, for the average festival goer, the day can get REAL expensive. After the price of your ticket, VIP experience, souvenirs, and three $12 grilled cheese sandwiches, you might be wondering how you’re going to afford groceries for the next few weeks.
So I’m writing this for the baller on a budget. The music lover who just wants to sprawl out on a blanket with a book in hand, blades of freshly cut grass underfoot, and the only thing you’re paying for is a snack from one of the food trucks parked nearby. (Just please… don’t pay $12 for a grilled cheese. I REFUSE to buy a grilled cheese sandwich. I could buy all the ingredients at the supermarket for $12 and make 20 better grilled cheese sandwiches! deep breath Sorry for yelling.) Now that we’re all calm, go grab your sunglasses and that new Hawaiian shirt you’ve been waiting to premiere, and make a beeline to Government Center, the Esplanade, or any of these other fun locations to mingle with cool new people and listen to some amazing live music—for free.

So slide on those sunnies, grab a blanket (or don’t), and let the music come to you. It’s chill, it’s free, and it’s very much the move.
